🏕Welcome to 3rd Grade Summer Literacy Camp🏕
Hello, for those of you who do not know me, my name is Samantha VanDyke. I teach 2nd grade at Blennerhassett Elementary. This is my first summer teaching the Literacy camp and everyone’s first summer doing so online. Your time with me should be fun and exciting. You will be ready to jump right into 4th grade. For those guys I do know, I can’t believe you are 4th graders!!!
For this class there will be a few assignments that you are responsible for every week. No one is new to this online learning now and are probably getting good at managing your time to complete your tasks. If anything seems like too much or not enough just let me know and I will be happy to work with you. I want us to have fun and just stay engaged in reading while we wait to get back to school.
At any point you need to get in touch with my you may text or call me at 304-483-1830. I am looking forward to working with you all, Samantha VanDyke

Last week!!! July 27 - Engineers Build Models
Welcome to our last week of Summer Literacy. I have had a fun time this summer reading books with you and sharing our ideas on the books. I hope you enjoyed our time together. For our last book we have chose Engineers Build Models. Along with this book the worksheet asks you to design your own model as a drawing. I would like the students to fill out the drawing and then if able, use supplies around the house to create a 3D model of their drawing. You could use water bottles, plastic silverware, anything that the kids have lying around. I think they should have fun building their models and sharing out what they created together on our last video conference. We will have our meeting on Thursday at 11. I will have the link below for you to join. If you need any time with me after this week to ask questions or have me work with your child please feel free to text or email me at anytime. Thank you for putting in the effort this summer with your child and keeping them on pace for school this fall.
Book for the week of July 20-The Lion's Share
I hope you all are well. I wanted to thank you for allowing our meeting to be short last week. My daughter had a swollen lymph node and had to be checked out by the dr., who thankfully was able to see her immediately. Thankfully, it was an ear infection that hadn't gotten painful yet. During this pandemic, the littlest of things will scare you quickly. She is doing great now and appreciate your thoughts.
Now to our week. I KNOW how difficult it is to get your kids to read and do I-Ready and please don't feel judged or stressed by me in taking this course. I understand. I think it is wonderful to be in this course to get some reading and you all have been doing a terrific job! Thank you. I know last weeks book was a long one and difficult to finish this week. The kids and I spoke and they are to finish last weeks Sparks! book and read The Lion's Share this week. Do not worry about the Sparks worksheet. If you can have them complete The Lion's Share worksheet. I do have planned for us to meet at 10 am on Thursday. I will set the link and have that ready for you here. Again, if you need anything I am available anytime.

Book for the week of July 13- SPARKS!
This week in our summer course we will be reading the fiction-comic book, SPARKS! Although this book seems lengthy, it is a fairly quick read since it is set up as a comic. I am sure the kids will enjoy. I am asking them to only complete the one pull-out worksheet page that goes along with SPARKS and to do one lesson of their I-Ready reading. I will have our video chat Thursday morning at 10 am. I will send a reminder out on Wednesday. I hope everyone is enjoying the summer. If you need anything please call.
Book for the week of July 6- Meteors
Hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend. This week the kids picked a non-fiction book, Meteors. We will complete the pull-out page "Meteors" and in either the new Summer Journal or the one we have been working in, pg 12 "Fact Wheel." I have also linked a fun video on Meteor facts for the kids to enjoy. Don't forget to get your one lesson in on I-Ready. Doing I-ready will really help your child get better prepared for 4th grade. Our Teams meeting will be at 10am Thursday. If you need any extra help on the lessons, reading practice, or just a different time to work with me than Thursday, let me know and I would be happy to schedule that. Have a great week.
Book for the week of June 29- Zapato Power; Freddie Ramos Makes a Splash
You will only need to work on one workbook page this week since the book is so long. Don't forget to do your I-Ready lesson also. This is a great way to stay ready for 4th grade. Our video chat will be at our normal 10 time on Thursday morning. If you do not see me join at 10 please text me. We are having some connection issues and I want to try to resolve that. I am sure it is my fault. The Teams program isn't user friendly for me. I am trying. Don't forget to get your new set of books Tuesday. I have been told they will be available in front of your school by 9am with the free book giveaway they have every Tuesday. We have a lot of books to choose from for next week. I am excited what you want to read next. If there are any issues getting the books please text me. I will do what I can to help out. Also, if you want or need one-on-one time working with me at any point, I am happy to work with you on this. I am linking a teacher reading our book this week, so if you want to follow along as she reads, please enjoy.

|
I think some people were having issues logging on to our chat meeting this week. If you want to text me your email address, if I don't already have it, then I can send you a direct link straight to your email. I will continue to put the link with our book. If you use the link on here, make sure you connect with the one connected to Batman. If you try the previous links they will not work. I do have to change our 10 time next Thursday to 11:30 due to a meeting scheduled for me during our normal chat time. Do not forget to work on your 1 I-Ready lesson. If anyone wants to work one-on-one with me or needs a different time, text and I am happy to set that up with you. Hope you all are having a fun summer so far!
This reading was done for a different school so the beginning part talks about AR and I am not asking students to take the AR test if available. I suggest using the reading log on the back side of your Summer Reading Journal to keep the names of all your books your read this summer and take the tests when school starts back up so you earn your points then. At my school summer points wouldn't count towards your point goals.

Suggestions while reading Ron’s Big Mission:
- First reading, read Ron’s Big Mission on your own.
- Look over your workbook questions to get an idea of what you are to answer, but don’t answer yet.
- Reading two, watch the YouTube link of Ron’s Big Mission below. Follow along with your own book. Think about the questions you need to answer and try to come up with some ideas on how to answer as you listen. (If the story is too difficult for you to read on your own the first reading can be you just listening to the YouTube video.)
- Answer your workbook questions and complete your reading journal page.
- Don’g forget while reading this story, Ron was a real person who this story is about. He did not write the book and the author changed some of the information, but the incident really did happen to Ron. Read the Author’s note on the last page. If you want to learn more about who Ron McNair was do some research.
